Your Face Is a Literal Graveyard for Microscopic Mites That Can't Poop

The mechanism behind this is pure evolutionary economics. Demodex mites are so small that maintaining an excretory system would take up a huge proportion of their body mass. By eliminating the anus entirely—and the organs and structures that support it—they can shrink down to a size that lets them thrive in your smallest follicles where larger parasites can't reach. It's a miniaturization strategy, and the cost is that they become walking waste containers. From the mite's perspective, it works fine: they reproduce, their offspring inherit the same design, and the whole operation sustains itself for as long as humans have skin. From your perspective, you're essentially a mobile mite cemetery.

The weird part? You probably don't care. Billions of humans have walked around with these creatures their entire lives and suffered no ill effects. Demodex rarely causes problems unless you have rosacea or certain immune conditions that make you sensitive to their presence. Otherwise, they're just there. Silent. Accumulating. Dying. Decomposing.
